This is the story of the lantern carrier, a woman spirit who haunts young Stella at night. Stella, who has to face the very unpredictable and unsettling nature of the lantern carrier, has to find a way to stop these hauntings from continuing. She will learn that the answer on how to stop these hauntings lies deep inside her very own house, in a sad and macabre way.
The Lantern Carrier was my graduation project in upper secondary school. The graduation project was originally going to be an animated short film adaption of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, the story was going to be remixed into an own personal version. This was a project that I had been planning since the beginning of 2020, but there was not enough time to make such a huge project when the semester started. And that's the reason why I had to come up with a brand new concept essentially. I came up with the Lantern Carrier character during the summer, and I also created the Stella character during the same period, when I brought together these characters, I felt a strong feeling that I could create an environment and a story around these two. I wrote the script and created the storyboards during the fall, and animated the whole film from late November 2020 to early January 2021. When it was completed, the film premiered on Youtube on the 30th of January 2021 and received many positive responses. The Lantern Carrier is by far my longest film, at its 6 minutes and 42 seconds. It is also my first try at doing a film with dramatic themes rather than comedic. The film's themes and aesthetic were heavily inspired by the works of Swedish artist and animator Per Åhlin, the German silent film Nosferatu from 1922 and some of the classical gothic authors of the 19th century, like Edgar Allan Poe.
